Picture a man sitting in a Vienese coffee house, sharing his theories and experiences with many enthusiastic listeners.
Adler, a trained medical doctor and psychiatrist, shared his insights on human behaviour in such a way as to inspire and motivate people to change. Individual Psychology was explained and demonstrated through lectures, open family forums, group counsel sessions and writings.
His theory is based on five assumptions:
1. We are social beings. Our social interest is a feeling of belonging and contribution to welfare of our family, organization, community etc. 2. We are self-determining, creative. Life is what you make it! 3. We are subjective. How we see the world becomes our personal reality. 4. We are goal oriented. We move from a perceived minus to a plus position. 5. We are holistic. A person works toward the goal on all levels of his/her experience.
